This pair of Humpback whale bulls were spotted not far offshore at Coconut Wells, north of Broome.  Although it’s difficult to discern the difference in sex between Humpbacks unless one has a good view of the underside near the tail, bulls exude a LOT of testosterone, charging around and creating mini tidal waves as they move.

There were several pods, including cows with calves in the vicinity. The bulls are waiting for an opportunity to mate with any cow who comes into oestrus.  The gestation time for Humpback whales is about 11 months, and the whales generally return to their area of birth to give birth in turn.
